Mrs. Peggy Grant will present a talk and slideshow on the life and art of her husband; world renown artist, Adam Grant. Learn about the extraordinary life journey of Adam Grant and see a slideshow of some of his most interesting works and her pilgrimage to Poland. Mrs. Grant has traveled worldwide in an effort to keep the story and legacy of her husband, Adam (Grochowski) Grant, alive for future generations.
Adam’s story, set during one of the most terrible periods in human history, is a quiet tribute to his Roman Catholic faith and the restorative power of the creative spirit. Imprisoned at the age of 18 (from 1943 until 1945) in two of the most infamous concentration camps in human history, Grochowski’s unique figurative drawing skill saved his life: first at the Nazi concentration camps, Auschwitz and Mauthausen; then for 5 years in a displaced persons camp in Regensburg, Germany. Four paintings from his Holocaust Series are currently in the Auschwitz collection.
Adam came to the United States in 1950 and changed his last name to Grant. His first job was designing floats for the J.L. Hudson Co.’s annual Christmas Parade in Detroit, Michigan. He was then hired as chief designer for the Paint-by-Numbers sets at CraftMaster. There he met his future wife, Peggy Brennan. In 1956 CraftMaster was moved to Toledo, Ohio, where Adam and Peggy raised their family. Millions of his Paint-by-Numbers designs have been sold, and the Smithsonian American History Museum featured several of them in a 2001 special Paint-by-Numbers exhibit in Washington, D.C. In addition to his Paint-by-Numbers designs, many of his other original paintings are in museums, universities and private collections.
In February, 2009, the Adam-Grochowski Grant Hall was dedicated in the Residence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
We are grateful to Mrs. Grant to be able to present the story of her husband, Adam, and hope you can join us for this motivating story.
Don’t forget to make dinner reservations at Ski’s before the presentation.
