Remember those special meals that mom use to make? Or how about going over to grandma’s house for one of your favorite dinners? For many, the thought of these meals is a very special memory.
Well, now there is a restaurant that specializes in the kind of meals that come straight from grandma’s recipe book - and it’s right here in Sylvania. It’s called Ski’s Polish-American Restaurant.
If you haven’t already been to Ski’s, you’re missing one of the most delightful and unique dining experiences in the Toledo area. The food and the background music (polkas, of course) remind you of an old-fashioned Polish wedding. And the taste reminds you of the kind of home-cooked meals only mom or grandma could fix.
Ski’s features both a Polish and American side to its menu including some very interesting and delicious soups. There are plenty of Polish entrees including kielbasa (fresh sausage), golabki (cabbage rolls), kluszki z kapusta (noodles and cabbage), czarnina (duck soup), potato pancakes, as well as several different flavors of pierogi (dumplings).
There are a number of delicious Polish side items as well. Two of the absolutely “must try” items are Ski’s sauerkraut balls and their desserts. The sauerkraut balls are made with Polish ham, sautéed onions and kapusta which is a Polish-style sweet & sour cabbage. They are rolled in a special crumb mixture and fried to a rich, golden brown color. It’s quite likely you have never tasted sauerkraut balls the way Ski’s makes them. So call them delicious, scrumptious, delectable or whatever else. But one thing for sure you’ll call them is gooood!
The other “must try” item is any one of their yummy and luscious home-made desserts. Every morning, Ski’s makes at least a dozen different pies – including everything from dutch apple to coconut crème to a banana split pie. Cakes, cobblers, and cheesecakes are also part of their daily dessert fare and the list of these goodies changes every day.
Ski’s also makes a very popular Polish dessert called “chrusciki” or also known as angel wings. These tasty little treats are especially popular during the Christmas and Easter holidays. And because Ski’s makes them the old-fashioned way – thin and crispy with plenty of powdered sugar - lots of folks who enjoyed these treats as kids, are scooping them up by the box full. You just don’t find these kind of angel wings anywhere else.
The American side of their menu includes a number of entrees that many would call old-style “comfort food”. Included are such items as hamburger gravy, shepherd’s pie, meatloaf, stew, stuffed green peppers and a lot of other foods you’ve probably had growing up. The portions you receive are extremely generous and you positively won’t leave Ski’s hungry. All of the food items are made much the same way mom and grandma use to make them and they are just as appetizing and delicious as you remember them.
The other thing you will notice about Ski’s is their prices – they are very reasonable especially for the portions of food you get. Their Polish platter which includes chicken, kielbasa, pierogi, a cabbage roll, potatoes, gravy, sweet & sour cabbage and a vegetable is about a pound and a half of food and only costs twelve dollars. Ski’s proves that you can have a great meal for a reasonable price. In fact, The Toledo Blade gave Ski’s a 4 Star Food Rating and referred to their prices as inexpensive.
Ski’s truly is a unique dining experience and anyone who enjoys Polish or old- fashioned style “comfort” food will likely put Ski’s at the top of their “favorites” list.
Ski’s is Toledo’s only full-service Polish-American restaurant. They have a large selection of Polish entrees as well as an extensive American menu with plenty of home-cooked comfort foods.
