On April 10th, Poland's President, Lech Kacznski, and 95 other Polish political, military and civilian dignitaries were flying to Smolensk, a city in Russia, for the purpose of commemorating the 70th anniversary of a horrific massacre that occured at the Katyn Forest in the early spring of 1940. Sadly, the plane that was carrying these Polish dignitaries crashed just before landing and all aboard were killed. It was, indeed, an ironic twist of fate that claimed even more lives related to the tragic event that occured at Katyn.
In 1939, Hitler and Stalin agreed to a mutual non-aggression pact; their armies would not attack one another. The intent of their agreement was to join forces for the purpose of destroying Poland's military command and eradicating its population of engineers, intellectuals and other citizens whose education and expertise would help Poland to function independently. The agreement between Hitler and Stalin lasted only long enought for their armies to join forces and accompolish this mission.
In the spring of 1940, the Soviets proceeded with the "liquidation" of these Polish military officers and civilians by shooting nearly 22,000 men in the Katyn forest and then burying their bodies in mass graves. This was the massacre that President Kaczynski and the others were going to Russia to commemorate.
Therefore, in memory and in honor of the victims of this tragic plane crash, The Polish American Community of Toledo is sponsoring a special one night only showing of the award winning film, Katyn. We urge you to come and see the true story behind one of World War II's greatest tragedies.
