 THE MOVIE - "KATYN"

Being Shown at The Maumee Indoor Theatre

One Night Only

Tuesday, April 27th, at 6:30 PM

On April 10th, Poland's President, Lech Kacznski, and 95 other Polish political, military and civilian dignitaries were flying to Smolensk, a city in Russia, for the purpose of commemorating the 70th anniversary of a horrific massacre that occured at the Katyn Forest in the early spring of 1940.  Sadly, the plane that was carrying these Polish dignitaries crashed just before landing and all aboard were killed.  It was, indeed, an ironic twist of fate that claimed even more lives related to the tragic event that occured at Katyn.

In 1939, Hitler and Stalin agreed to a mutual non-aggression pact; their armies would not attack one another.  The intent of their agreement was to join forces for the purpose of destroying Poland's military command and eradicating its population of engineers, intellectuals and other citizens whose education and expertise would help Poland to function independently.  The agreement between Hitler and Stalin lasted only long enought for their armies to join forces and accompolish this mission.

In the spring of 1940, the Soviets proceeded with the "liquidation" of these Polish military officers and civilians by shooting nearly 22,000 men in the Katyn forest and then burying their bodies in mass graves.  This was the massacre that President Kaczynski and the others were going to Russia to commemorate.

Therefore, in memory and in honor of the victims of this tragic plane crash, The Polish American Community of Toledo is sponsoring a special one night only showing of the award winning film, Katyn.  We urge you to come and see the true story behind one of World War II's greatest tragedies.

There is no charge for attending this film, but please make reservations by calling (419) 882-1199.  Seating will be limited.

These pictures were taken on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at St. Adalbert's Catholic Church in Toledo, Ohio. Many of Toledo's Polish community came together on that day to pay their respects to Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, Marie, and 94 other people who lost their lives on that fateful plane trip to the Russian forest of Katyn. There, they planned on observing the 70th anniversary of the massacre of 22,000 Polish military officers by the Russian army. After the memorial Mass, the participants joined in a candlelight vigil and observed a moment of silence for those who died. Afterward, the Polish National Anthem was played. PACT extends a heartfelt thank you to Lidia Ebersole, who coordinated this memorial observance. These photos were taken by PACT Board member and photographer, John Klocinski.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski Killed in Plane Crash in Russia; Poland in Mourning

Mr. Kaczynski had been on his way to attend a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, in which Soviet secret police slaughtered some 20,000 military officers that had been captured when the USSR invaded eastern Poland at the start of World War II. The Soviet Union denied and covered up the atrocity for half a century and, in a bitter irony, this ceremony had been intended as a moment of reconciliation, in which Russians and Poles could mourn the dead together.

People gather in front of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw to pay their respects to the late Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria, both among the 97 people killed when the presidential plane crashed Saturday morning in Russia.
