Member Meeting

On January 19th, 2010, PACT conducted its first annual member’s meeting.  It was a productive night.  The board members were able to meet some of  PACT’s most important assets; its members!  On the agenda for the evening was a review of last year’s accomplishments against it’s goals, which were to introduce PACT to the Polish community and to build on its membership list.  PACT board members feel that those goals have been met and are very enthusiastic about the response of the community and it’s acceptance of “the new kid on the block”.  To everyone who has joined PACT or attended any of our events, we are truly grateful.

We also discussed the future of PACT and how we would like to move forward.  Of course, we will always be working to sign new members into our family.  We will also continue to provide events that our members will enjoy.  In addition to continuing last year’s goals, we will focus on these goals in 2010:

•    Provide scholarships to students of Polish descent
•    Build a Polish Community Center.

We must raise funds to realize these goals, so this year we will concentrate on a few fundraisers.  The first event is Fun Day on Sunday scheduled for February 14th at Olivet Lutheran Church.  Another is Reverse Raffle/Las Vegas Day on April 11, 2010, at Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall.  In June, PACT’s second annual Golf Tournament will be held at Legacy Golf Course in Ottawa Lake, Michigan. Member involvement is essential for these fundraisers to be successful so we are hopeful that PACT members will volunteer to help at these events.  More information on these events will be available as their dates approach.

The member meeting was also an opportunity to vote for future board members.  The following members were elected to the board for the coming year:  Stan Machosky, Jack Sparagowski, Mike Janiszewski, John Klocinski, Tim Paluszak, Rozanne Nitschke, Bill Peneff and Sherry Servis.   PACT is still looking for its ninth board member.  If any member would like to serve on the board for 2010, please contact us at info@polishcommunity.org .

Last but not least, everyone was treated to samples of Chicken Paprikash, Bigos, and blackberry compote; so no one went home on an empty stomach.

WIGILIA CELEBRATION

Ninety-seven members, family and guests joined in the early celebration of Wigilia on December 13th at Ski’s Restaurant. Everything about Wigilia is special, unique and surrounded by legend and tradition and so was our early celebration of the day.

Chelsea, the young daughter of a member, opened the evening by lighting a candle that was then placed in the window, symbolizing the hope that the Godchild, in the form of a stranger, might come to share the meal.  An extra place was set at the table for the unexpected guest.

Wigilia is the most symbolic and festive family gathering of food, song and friendship for Polish people.  It is the single most important day of the year.
Sister Aloise and Sister Geraldine, Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, OH, shared both prayers and information about Wigilia traditions starting with the breaking of Oplatki.  Everyone broke the traditional wafer and exchanged good wishes for health, wealth and happiness in the New Year.

Deacon Terry McAuley read the Christmas story and Father Brian Hurley, from St. Anthony in Temperance, MI, blessed the food.

Following a toast of “Na Zdrowie!” using Truskawka Compote (Strawberry wine), Jack and Gayle Sparagowski, owners of Ski’s Restaurant, and their team of fast moving servers served an outstanding 11 course meatless Polish meal beginning with Sledzie (Creamed Herring), Mizeria (Cucumbers in dill sauce), and Zupa Ogorkowa (Dill Pickle Soup), served with Placek (Polish Coffee Cake). The main course included Ziemniakow I Ser Pierogi (Potato & Cheese Dumplings), Smazone Ryb (Fried Fish), Kluski z Kapusta (Noodles & Cabbage) and Buraki (Beets).  The meal was capped off with Miod I Orzechy Wloskie (Honey & Walnuts) and Chrusciki (Angel Wings).

Throughout the meal Tony and Susan Perzynski along with Janice Hummer got the group in the Christmas spirit by leading them in singing traditional Koledy (Polish Christmas Carols).  Tony surprised his wife with a birthday cake and invited all present with December birthdays to sing “Sto lat.”  Tony also graciously provided extra Oplatki for those who would like to continue the tradition with their friends and family on Christmas Eve.
