OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

Submitted by pact on Mon, 10/26/2009 - 22:08

Dear PACT members,
Don't forget that October is Polish Heritage Month!  We at PACT hope that you take time to remember your Polish ancestors that have gone before you and appreciate  the rich and proud heritage that they have passed on to you.
PACT has been busy working on several projects for the coming months.  Included in these plans is the Wigilia celebration that we are planning for Sunday, December 13, 2009.  This is our first Wigilia celebration for our members and we are working to make this celebration as close to an authentic Polish Wigilia as possible.  If anyone has any suggestions for, or stories of  your own Christmas Eve celebrations that you observe, please e-mail us with these suggestions at info@polishcommunity.org.
We hope all of you can attend this Christmas Eve dinner.  It will be as close as possible to the ones that our ancestors had in the past.

Other projects we are working on are the presentation by Mrs. Peggy Grant, wife of renown artist, Adam Grant.  This presentation will be on Tuesday, November 17th , 6:30 p.m, at Ski's Restaurant.  PACT is also working to get representatives from the Polish American Sports Hall of Fame to talk about the many popular athletes of Polish descent.  In early 2010, PACT is planning on having a casino day, which should be a fun event for everyone.  PACT is hoping that our members will be able to attend and volunteer for the casino event.  Also, we will need donations for the auction.  If you can donate items for the auction, or know someone or a business that would be able to donate items for our casino auction, contact us to help out!  We will be sending out more information about this event in the near future.  If you have any questions about these up-coming events, or have any  suggestions for other events that you would like to see, e-mail us at info@polishcommunity.com.

Mrs. Peggy Grant will present a talk and slideshow on the life and art of her husband; world renown artist, Adam Grant.  Learn about the extraordinary life journey of Adam Grant and see a slideshow of some of his most interesting works and her pilgrimage to Poland.  Mrs. Grant has traveled worldwide in an effort to keep the story and legacy of her husband, Adam (Grochowski) Grant, alive for future generations.

Adam's story, set during one of the most terrible periods in human history, is a quiet tribute to his Roman Catholic faith and the restorative power of the creative spirit. Imprisoned at the age of 18 (from 1943 until 1945) in two of the most infamous concentration camps in human history, Grochowski's unique figurative drawing skill saved his life: first at the Nazi concentration camps, Auschwitz and Mauthausen; then for 5 years in a displaced persons camp in Regensburg, Germany.   Four paintings from his Holocaust Series are currently in the Auschwitz collection.

Adam came to the United States in 1950 and changed his last name to Grant. His first job was designing floats for the J.L. Hudson Co.'s annual Christmas Parade in Detroit, Michigan. He was then hired as chief designer for the Paint-by-Numbers sets at CraftMaster. There he met his future wife, Peggy Brennan.   In 1956 CraftMaster was moved to Toledo, Ohio, where Adam and Peggy raised their family.  Millions of his Paint-by-Numbers designs have been sold, and the Smithsonian American History Museum featured several of them in a 2001 special Paint-by-Numbers exhibit in Washington, D.C.   In addition to his Paint-by-Numbers designs, many of his other original paintings are in museums, universities and private collections.

In February, 2009, the Adam-Grochowski Grant Hall was dedicated in the Residence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
We are grateful to Mrs. Grant to be able to present the story of her husband, Adam, and hope you can join us for this motivating story.
Don’t forget to make dinner reservations at Ski’s before the presentation.

Echoes Of Poland

If you didn’t have a chance to attend the Echoes of Poland concert on Sunday, May 30th at the Ohio Theater, you missed a real Polish treat.  All areas of Poland were represented in dance, song, music and gorgeous costumes.

The concert began with a beautiful overture played by Kapela. They also opened the second segment of the concert with an instamental piece.

A trumpet solo by Justen Martyniak-Rhoades was included.  In Kracow, every hour on the hour a trumpeter plays the” hejnal “ from the tower of St. Mary’s Church.  It served as a warning against an attack by the Tartars.  One watchman who began the hejnal during an attack in the 12th century was struck by an arrow after the first few notes and it took a few moments for a replacement to continue.  Now there is always a pause after the first few notes in his honor.  The hejnal is now played as a greeting for visitors.

Soloist in the concert were Rob Szczublewski, Lidia Ebersole, and Maria Szkudlarek.  A dance ensemble also had featured  soloists Kammie Pietras, ,Alyson Krajewski, Grace Grutkowski, and Dania Gnida

The entire concert and folk dances were a feast for everyone who attended.
